The People's Republic of Bangladesh was established on March 26, 1971. After independence, it adopted and modified trademark laws from India and Pakistan. The current trademark law was amended in 1975 and took effect on January 1, 1976.
Bangladesh is a signatory to international intellectual property treaties such as the TRIPS Agreement, Paris Convention, and WIPO Convention.

Important Notes
- Bangladesh only allows single-class applications (one mark per class) and does not accept multi-class applications.
- Bangladesh is not a member of the Madrid Agreement or Madrid Protocol, so trademark registration in Bangladesh can only be processed through direct national registration.
Trademark Registration Process
- Application Submission: Only single-class applications are allowed. Priority may be claimed within 6 months from the priority date.
- Examination:
- Publication: 2 months
- Registration: If no opposition is filed during the opposition period, the registration certificate will be issued upon payment of the registration fee.
Validity Period and Renewal
A trademark in Bangladesh is valid for 7 years from the filing date. Renewal can be filed within 6 months before expiration, with each renewal extending the validity by 10 years.
A grace period of 6 months after expiration is allowed for late renewal.
