On July 21, 2026, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) announced that Commissioner Kasai and Deputy Commissioner Yasuda met with intellectual property offices and other related parties from more than 20 countries and regions as part of their participation in the 68th series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO, held in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the meetings, the JPO confirmed its continued cooperation on intellectual property administration with each office and exchanged information on the latest initiatives. The JPO also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) on cooperation in the field of intellectual property.

The bilateral meetings covered a broad cross-section of the global IP community, including the European Patent Office (EPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the offices of India, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Latvia, as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), WIPO itself, and the International Trademark Association (INTA).

The JPO delegation also met counterparts from Guatemala, Peru, Bhutan, Singapore, Australia, Egypt, Canada, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Chile, Indonesia, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI). Meetings with the USPTO were held with Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and USPTO Director John Squires, and with WIPO Director General Daren Tang and his senior management team.

The series of meetings reflects the JPO's strategy of deepening work-sharing and administrative cooperation with partner offices at a time when the WIPO Assemblies have become the principal annual venue for coordinating the international IP system.
