Finland Trademark Registration
Finland is one of the member states of the European Union and ranks first among the five Nordic countries. Finland has consistently been at the forefront of the world in terms of economy, trade, and social development. Finnish trademarks are uniformly managed by the Finnish National Patent and Registration Office, with Finnish as the official language.
Finland adopts the Nice Classification for trademarks and accepts multi-class applications. Elements that can be registered as trademarks include text, personal names, letters, numbers, graphics, three-dimensional signs, sounds, etc.
Finland is a signatory to international intellectual property treaties such as the Paris Convention, WIPO Convention, Nice Agreement, and TRIPS Agreement. As a member of the European Union and the Madrid Protocol, Finland participates in both regional and international trademark systems.
Application Routes
- Direct registration through the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH).
- As Finland is an EU member, registering an EU trademark also protects the trademark in Finland.
- Finland officially joined the Madrid Protocol on April 1, 1996, making it a member of the Madrid Union. Therefore, trademark registration in Finland can also be processed through the Madrid International Registration system.

Trademark Registration Process
- Application Submission: The applicant or their authorized agent submits the trademark application and required documents to the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH).
- Acceptance Receipt: Upon receiving the application, the PRH conducts a preliminary review. If no issues are found, the PRH assigns an application number and issues an acceptance notice to the applicant.
- Trademark Examination: The PRH further examines whether the trademark meets the basic registration requirements.
- Trademark Publication: Trademarks deemed registrable by the PRH will be published on the official platform for public review and opposition.
- Approval and Certificate Issuance: If no opposition is filed during the publication period or if opposition is unsuccessful, the PRH approves the trademark registration and issues a registration certificate to the applicant.
Note: Before submitting a trademark application in Finland, the applicant must provide a declaration of trademark use, proving that the trademark is already in use. This declaration can be submitted by providing records of trademark use or other supporting evidence.
Validity Period and Renewal
A Finnish trademark is valid for 10 years from the registration date. Each renewal extends the validity for another 10 years. Renewal can be filed one year before expiration, with a 6-month grace period for late renewal.
