II. Patent Application Pathways in Singapore

III. Required Documents for Patent Application in Singapore
Invention Patent:
- Application Documents: English version of the 'Five Documents' (including description, claims, drawings, abstract, and abstract drawings).
- Application Information: Applicant's and inventor's name/entity name, address, postal code, nationality, etc. Companies must provide a business license.
- Priority Document (if applicable).
- Power of Attorney
Industrial Design Patent:
- Applicant's name, address, nationality.
- Inventor's name, address, nationality.
- Product Name (generic name only; no model numbers or irrelevant information).
- Design Drawings (six orthographic views + perspective view).
- Priority Information (if applicable): Priority application receipt/acceptance notice + priority document (DAS code or certified copy of priority document).
Acceptable drawing types: Line drawings, rendered drawings.
IV. Patent Application Process and Timeline in Singapore
Process:
- Application Submission: Submit a provisional or complete application to the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) and pay the corresponding fees.
- Preliminary Examination: After the filing date is confirmed, if the applicant pays the application fee (within 1 month) and submits the claims (within 12 months), IPOS will conduct a preliminary examination.
- Publication: Singapore patent applications are published in the patent journal 18 months from the filing date. Applicants may request early publication.
- Search and Substantive Examination: The examiner conducts a search for prior art and substantive examination. If no grounds for refusal are found, the applicant will receive a notice that the patent application is grantable. If the examiner raises one or more grounds for refusal, the applicant must respond within 5 months (substantive examination) or 3 months (supplementary examination) from the date of the written opinion.
- Grant: The applicant must submit a request for the grant of a patent to IPOS within 2 months of receiving the notice that the application is grantable; otherwise, the application will be deemed abandoned. Once all grant conditions are met, IPOS will issue the patent certificate to the applicant.
Note: Singapore industrial design patents only undergo formal examination.
