China | CNIPA and Austrian Patent Office Sign Renewed MoU on IP Cooperation
On July 20, 2026, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the Austrian Patent Office (APO) signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of intellectual property in Geneva, marking the 40th anniversary of their bilateral partnership. The updated MoU strengthens practical cooperation in IP knowledge exchange and the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) program.
JPO Holds Bilateral Meetings with More Than 20 IP Offices at WIPO Assemblies; Signs Memorandum of Cooperation with Spain's OEPM
On the margins of the 68th series of meetings of the WIPO Assemblies in Geneva, Japan Patent Office (JPO) Commissioner Kasai and Deputy Commissioner Yasuda held bilateral meetings with IP offices and related organizations from more than 20 countries and regions, including the EPO, EUIPO, USPTO and the offices of India and the United Kingdom. The JPO also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Spain's OEPM on cooperation in the field of intellectual property.
Mexico's IMPI Designated as International Searching and Preliminary Examining Authority Under the PCT
On July 13, 2026, the Assembly of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), meeting during the WIPO Assemblies in Geneva, unanimously approved the designation of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) as an International Searching Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA). The French Competition Authority ordered Meta to resume good-faith negotiations with press publishers' societies APIG and DVP over remuneration for the use of press content under the EU neighbouring right, citing provisional concerns over unfair trading conditions. Separately, the Paris Judicial Court granted Lacoste EU-wide interim relief against Shein companies over garments bearing crocodile images, including a provisional payment of EUR 110,000.
United States | USPTO Signs Its First Accelerated Patent Grant Arrangement with an African Country — Ghana
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Ghana's Registrar General's Department signed a five-year Accelerated Patent Grant (APG) statement of intent on July 9, 2026, in Geneva on the margins of the WIPO Assemblies. Ghana becomes the USPTO's tenth APG partner and its first in Africa. Under the arrangement, applicants granted a U.S. patent may request accelerated grant of a corresponding Ghanaian application, improving examination efficiency while preserving Ghana's IP standards.
