South Africa is the second-largest economy in Africa and officially became a member of the Paris Convention and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on January 1, 2021. South Africa joined WIPO in 1983, which is an independent international organization with no restrictions on member states.

- Certified copy of the priority document and its English translation (if priority is claimed)
Trademark Registration Process
- Application Submission: Multi-class applications are not allowed. Therefore, if an applicant wishes to register a trademark in multiple classes, a separate application must be submitted for each class.
- Formal Examination: Checks whether the application is correctly completed and whether the application fee has been paid. If the examination is passed, the trademark application will be assigned an official filing date and application number.
- Substantive Examination
- Publication/Opposition: The publication period is 3 months. During this period, any party may file an opposition against the application.
- Registration: Issuance of the trademark registration certificate.
Validity Period and Renewal
A trademark is valid for 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed upon expiry, with each renewal extending the validity by 10 years.
