Trademark Registration Application Process
- Submit Application
- Examination: Approximately 2 months after submission, if the examiner finds the trademark unregistrable, they will issue a letter stating the reasons for refusal or required modifications. The applicant can respond within the specified timeframe (generally 6 months).
- Publication: The publication period is 3 months. Anyone can file an opposition during this period, stating reasons and submitting relevant evidence.
- Grant and Certificate Issuance: Since August 2020, only electronic certificates are issued.
Term of Protection and Renewal
A UK trademark is valid for 10 years from the filing date.
The protection term can be extended by renewal within the year before the trademark expires. Each renewal extends the validity by another 10 years.
Furthermore, UK trademark law provides a grace period: a renewal request can be filed within 6 months after the trademark's expiry date to extend its validity.
