On July 27, 2026, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) published its latest Quick Reads update, featuring recent international cooperation initiatives. The lead item covers bilateral meetings held by JPO Commissioner KASAI with Vietnamese IP authorities in Hanoi on June 19, 2026.
Commissioner KASAI held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Luu Hoang Long, Director General of the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IPVN). They exchanged views on future cooperation between the two offices, including cooperation on patent examination through the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH). On the same day, Commissioner KASAI also held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Tran Huu Linh, Director General of the Agency for Domestic Market Surveillance and Development (DMS) of Vietnam. They exchanged views on initiatives by both authorities aimed at strengthening measures against intellectual property rights infringements in markets and online.
The JPO Quick Reads also reported on the IP5 Trial and Appeal Boards High-Level Meeting, which was hosted by the JPO in Sendai, Japan, on June 17, 2026. At the meeting, the trial and appeal boards of the IP5 offices introduced their legal systems and practices as well as recent developments. They also exchanged their experiences to improve quality and enhance operational efficiency through the use of AI and digitalization in trial and appeal departments.
The JPO proposed the 'IP5 Administrative Judge Exchange Program' as an initiative related to trial and appeal practices, with the aim of further strengthening cooperation among IP5 offices. The offices agreed to continue the discussion toward its implementation.
